Exploring the Systems That Shape You
Why this tool is useful
This version of a systems reflection tool is designed to help you see yourself not as a problem to fix, but as a person moving through many overlapping systems. It recognises that your thoughts, feelings and behaviours are shaped by formal structures (like work, education and politics), informal networks (like family and friends) and inner systems (like your values, beliefs and body).
By exploring each area, you’re not trying to “get it right” — you’re noticing how different systems speak through you: whose voices feel loud, which expectations you’ve absorbed and where your own voice feels quiet or strong. This can reduce self‑blame and increase self‑understanding, especially when life feels confusing or overwhelming.
Psychological ideas behind this tool
This tool is influenced by systems thinking, narrative coaching and parts‑based approaches. Systems thinking suggests that our experiences make more sense when we look at the wider context we’re in, not just at the individual. Narrative coaching invites you to notice the stories you’ve inherited from culture, family, work and identity — and how they shape what feels possible. Parts‑based approaches recognise that different “parts” of you may respond differently to each system: one part might want to please, another might resist, another might feel tired or shut down.
Social and ecological psychology also remind us that our environment, community and access to resources deeply influence how safe, energised or stuck we feel. When you see your experience as a response to systems — rather than a personal flaw — it often becomes easier to find compassion, choice and small, meaningful shifts.
